Pittsburg Pre-Fishing: Day One

I’m up north for the NH Trout Unlimited Youth Camp and arrived early to fish.

I woke up early this morning and fished with Tall Timber’s Mickey Cunliffe. I fished with him last year and had great luck fishing various parts of the Trophy Stretch and the No-Kill section. Today, we fished just the Trophy Stretch.

We got into fish right away. In the first pool, I went five-for-nine with a mix of rainbows, brookies, and fallfish. I caught fish on nymphs and streamers and even experimented with a Euronymphing set up.

The fishing got better as the day went on, and I got into many more while nymphing, including a lone brown.

At around 9:30 am, the sun started peeking from the clouds, and bugs started popping in earnest. In one pool, I landed around seven rainbows, all but one on dry flies. Overall, the fish weren’t picky. We caught them on a variety of flies including Frenchies, Soft Hackles, Pheasant Tails, Stimulators and Elk Hair Caddis. When one fly stopped producing, we switched it up.

Unfortunately, due to impending bad weather, we cut the trip short. Still, the fishing was quite good. Overall, I went 21-for-32.

  1. Say hi to my son, Phil, who’s guiding there for his 4th straight year, after being a camper and CIT. His favorite week of every year.

    1. Thanks Evan! Will do haha. There are plenty of fish in there now and they are spread out. I barely even scratched the surface!
