Here’s an interesting Twitter thread. I have blogged before about the importance of water temperature. But, I didn’t realize that trout stop feeding when the water temperature goes down. I guess relative temperatures are as important as absolute ones?
Interesting.
The biggest mistake trout anglers make is fishing at the wrong time of day when trout will not be feeding.— Jay Ford Thurston (@trouttip) March 13, 2016
The reason most trout anglers fish at the wrong time of day is because they don’t understand the importance of water temperature.— Jay Ford Thurston (@trouttip) March 13, 2016
Trout can identify a change in water temp. of less than one degree and when the water temperature is going down they quit feeding.— Jay Ford Thurston (@trouttip) March 13, 2016
Once the trout angler understands the importance of water temperature he buys a stream thermometer and takes the temperature each hour.— Jay Ford Thurston (@trouttip) March 13, 2016

Definitely true – I fished the same river last Friday and Saturday. On Friday the fishing was great, but it was cold overnight, which resulted in much slower fishing on Saturday. I doubt the water temperature dropped more than a couple degrees, but it was enough of a change from the warming trend of previous days to slow down the fishing.
