As I’ve written before here, I’m a huge fan of stonefly and midge patterns (more here). In particular, I’ve been looking for new stonefly patterns and came across a great video from Fly Fish Food; a materials list here.
I’m a big believer in peacock herl for nymph bodies, and I afterwards heard that its luminescence gives the illusion of movement. A hunter friend also gave me a bunch of turkey feathers, and I’ve good luck with that material, too.
So, I’ll be tying some up and will give them a go.

This was my favorite pattern for years. It would work when nothing else would. Over the past 5 years or so, the Pat’s Rubber Legs has taken ascendency for the role of favorite stonefly pattern. But when I am looking for a smaller stonefly, I go to the 20 incher.
Good to know! What size hook do you use for the 20-Incher?
A size 14 with a 1/8″ black nickel bead. Some folks tie it without the bead, but I’ve always done better with it.
