Fly Fishing’s Health Benefits

I’ve blogged before on how fly fishing is good for us (here and here). Well, I am a living study of that.

I wear two personal devices that track all sorts of metrics. I also regularly weigh myself and take my blood pressure. At my age, I’m curious as to how my body is doing.

The devices are great! I use a Stelo CGM and wear the Oura 4 (it tracks activity levels, sleep quality, stress levels, etc.).

Here is the impact of my recent Montana trip:

  • Weight: -5.1%
  • Glucose: -20.9%
  • Systolic blood pressure: -12.0%
  • Diastolic blood pressure: +19.7%
  • Probability of diabetes: from 49% to 27%

That diastolic number does not make sense to me, but I’ll be having my annual physical soon and will ask.

For me, I feel healthier and was very happy in Montana. I was able to keep up with work, pay bills, and monitor our finances. But I was so relaxed. ICYI, a Harvard Medical School article on fly fishing’s benefits is here.

I’m resolved to spent more time outside. I exercise every day inside, but I think some outdoor walks would do me good, too.

So, get out there and fly fish!
