AI and Fly Fishing

Source: Perplexity

I’ve invested in technology companies for a few decades. My take on AI: over-hyped, but it is definitely real.

As the dry-fly fishing in Montana become more challenging, I decided to ask Perplexity about fly selection for the Upper Madison for mid-July. It recommended moving to attractor flies and mentioned the Purple Haze pattern. I’ve never fished it. So, I tied a few up for that afternoon’s session. I was shocked: it was lights-out action.

I do not think AI is a panacea. But I use Perplexity every day now. I almost never use Google search any more, and for my two day jobs, it has proven the ability to go deep into research. It’s helpful.

Curious, I asked Perplexity which were the top USA fly-fishing blogs. It mentioned this blog as #2 (source).

We strive to be a different blog: 100% of our profits go to Project Healing Waters and Casting for Recovery, and we have a volunteer team that covers all sorts of topics. We do not sell merch, guiding services, flies, or gear. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but that’s not what we do.

But all the credit goes to you, the readership.

So, thank you for reading our posts and commenting on them. Fly fishing is a great way to get healthier and to build community.

Tight lines to all!

  1. Glad your #2, but please NO AI for fly selection! When in doubt use an Adams Parachute — no AI just experience!
