The Marlborough Fly Fishing Show and Other Upcoming Events

Winter is upon us here and, thus, our options for outside are limited when it comes to fishing.

There are some places in New England where the temperatures have been cold enough for long enough for some hard-water adventures, but not everywhere. That means not all of us are willing to brave conditions that lend themselves to iced guides, and I don’t blame them.

With the weird lack of snow, there are few outdoor pursuits in this type of conditions that would get me out from behind the vise. To prevent me from turning into The Hunchback de Belchertown, though, I try to get out and about once in a while.

Here are some upcoming events that should be of interest to folks.

I. The Fly Fishing Show
Time: January 18, 19, & 20
Place: West Marlborough, MA
Website: here

It’s time for the Marlborough Fly Fishing Show again, and that makes it nearly a year since I started writing for this website. A lot has happened since that time, but I am just as excited to make it back.

Last year, I met some good people and learned a lot. I also found too many things to bring home with you. Sooooooo…unless you really want to have a good time and find some great deals on fishing gear, you should probably just skip this one.

There will be special guests teaching and tying, including blog favorites Jay Alward (@handmade_angler), Gary Borger, George Daniel, and Ed Engle, among many others.

Local and national gear companies like the Deerfield Fly Shop, Cheeky, and Vedavoo will be there. They have a showing of the International Fly Fishing Film Festival on Friday night, too!  And, you can check out tons of non-profits work, including Casting for Recovery and Project Healing Waters.

Check out the show’s website for the full list!

II. Vedavoo Vise Night Open House
Time: January 21, 6:30 pm
Place: 45 Granite St, Leominster, MA
Website: here

After Saturday at the Marlborough Fly Show, Vedavoo is going to host a fly-tying open house. I love going to their Vise Nights and have a great time; they are good people.

Come meet some new folks, tie some new flies, and hang out! It’s a BYOB and BYOV (bring your own vise) kinda affair.

III. Deerfield River Watershed Trout Unlimited’s “Flies, Pies and Lies”
Time: Saturday February 9, 10 am to 4 pm
Place: Deerfield Fly Shop, South Deerfield, MA
Website: here

Like fly tying? Like lying about the fish you caught? Like pizza? If you said yes to those three things, then you will be in good company with the rest of us.

Entry is $20 and includes pizza and a raffle entry. If you are feeling in a giving mood, consider leaving your creations for a DRWTU fundraiser, or take ’em and catch the biggest fish ever. Either way, you should have a good time.

IV. Deerfield Fly Shop’s Open House
Time: Saturday March 9, 9 am to 4 pm
Place: Deerfield Fly Shop, South Deerfield, MA
Website: here

This will be a fun day. Last year, they had raffles, speakers and demonstrations on local conservation and angling techniques. They had a room for tying and a batch of good people showed up!

Know any other events in the next month or two? Post it in the comments so other can know, too!
