When Trout Aim to Kill
ByJo TangoSome takes are soft. Others are vicious. Surprisingly, bit hits happen not just with streamers, but with nymphs, too, if you fish them “on the rise.” It’s a hugely productive technique; during a recent 32-fish day, two-thirds of the strikes came on the rise. At the end of a drift, the rig straightens out and…
Flipping the Script
ByJo TangoIt was the same cast and the same stage. But the script was different, as the fish didn’t cooperate. I ventured from our house yesterday at 3 am, armed with Trico dries, spinners, and lightly-weighted sunken spinners. I had tied up some ant patterns, too. It felt like the right line-up for an August fly-fishing…

2018 Fly Fishing Show: Tim Flagler and Ed Engle
ByJo TangoI was really excited to see on social media that noted fly tier Tim Flagler will be leading a class at the Marlborough show. So, I’ve signed up. The class will be focused on making small flies. I’m a huge fan of Tim’s work. For example, here is an ingenious Micro Egg pattern. A few…

how exactly do you float the sighter? I bought modern nymphing but did you sight fish them or just cover water?
I was fishing a stretch that has held fish in the past. Honestly, I was just practicing and was surprised to get two takes, landing one. Hence, the beer after!
I'm new at the floating sighter thing, but my thinking is that it will be more effective when there are substantial bugs in the water and fish are in the shallows to feed.
