This is an “in-between” moment for fly fishing right now. Freestones have been very low. The Swift River’s trout are extremely savvy. The autumn stocking has yet to begin.
Thankfully, a very significant low front is moving into the region, bringing with it quite a bit of rain. Rivers will surge, water temperatures will lower more, and we’ll be back in business.
To pass the time, I recently read Tying Small Flies. In short, the book is one of the best I’ve ever read on fly fishing. Author Ed Engle has a great writing style and offers very practical and clear steps on tying flies. I walked away with a dozen flies I’d like to tie and try out.
So, consider getting it and adding to your arsenal of flies.
