Every summer, I do a long weekend at Tall Timber Lodge. Great lake and river fly fishing, friendly service, and amazing food. I will be heading up for my tenth visit next month.
I prefer to fish for wild atlantic salmon and big brookies and rainbows in the much-heralded tailwaters of the Connecticut River. Bottom-released water makes for a controlled temperature, and there’s a fly-fishing-only section, too. There’s a nice mix of runs, glides, and pools. Really amazing water.
One time, over three-and-a-half days, I landed 48 trout and landlocked salmon.
At the end of the day, I head to the Lodge’s bar area. An insane assortment of seafood, game, and steaks. Home-made desserts. Generous pours from the bartenders. I think there’s nothing better after a 12-hour fishing outing than a cold beer and a steak.
There’s a hypnotic video up top. It really captures the beauty of the river.
