Spring Prep

To save money, I’ve long resisted buying sinking lines for streamers. I relied on polyleaders.

But I decided to go for it after seeing Concord Outfitters’ Vinny Giurleo sling so well in Patagonia. I ordered some of them, fly tying materials for Sparkle Minnows and Kreelexes, and some big articulated bugs from The Slide Inn. I nearly always fish flies that I’ve made, but those streamers looked so good on the website. I eyed them lustily each summer when I went to the shop.

And of course I needed a Fulling Mill streamer box. And why not throw in their “Tactical Max Box” (which fellow blogger Ashu Rao recommended) to replace my 15 year-old cracked one? While I was at it, I also bought the new Orvis Hydros reel for one simple reason: I am a weak man.

I saw on a satellite image that most of the ground in our areas was now free of snow. With the snow flows abating as well, I headed out early in the morning to throw streamers and nothing but. The water was 36°, and it didn’t warm up that much according to my feet. I got one take and landed one, and that was all. On Galloup’s Barely Legal in olive and white. What a beauty of a brown, and it made the trip worth it. Plus, I love my new streamer lines.

I hope everyone is well. What are you doing to prepare for spring fishing?

  1. What am I doing? I am trying desperately to cut down my overfilled fly boxes. After tying flies for over 50 years one tends to accumulate a lot of “killer patterns”!
