Well, it finally happened.
I spent a good chunk of the day driving my friend to the airport and then tying flies when I got back.
I went out for a short, late-afternoon session, not expecting much. For about an hour there was a blizzard of Caddis dancing around everywhere. I saw a few rises and just started to blind cast to fishy looking spots: bubbly, shallow water and transition zones.
I was surprised to find a large number of trout willing to take a size 16 Elk Hair Caddis. Cloudy skies and a quick spot of rain helped a great deal. The low water has made the fish quite spooky.
The nicest fish was a 17-inch brownie that took a lot of line and pulled hard. I wished I had not lost my net yesterday. Then after two hours, everything just died.
After some tasty restaurant meals with my friend, I opted for a simple dinner at the rental: salad and a can of refried beans topped with hot sauce. No whiskey.
Simple living out here in Montana.
