Joe Goodspeed: ‘Risk It for the Biscuit’

Temps may be freezing, and the wind may be howling at times, but it’s not too early to imagine trout.

One of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time is the one below. It features Joe Goodspeed, the savant who created the Thomas and Thomas Contact rods and is now at Diamondback doing his magic (our reviews of his Diamondback rods here and here).

Joe is pretty famous for his haul of big trout. Rumors had it that he fished marginal waters to find big browns that few people target. His strategy has been a mystery, until now.

In the video, Joe shows us the water type he fishes and how he does so. The video is long, but it’s worth the time.

  1. Interesting. I’m impressed he doesn’t hang up on the bottom too much as those flies would take a while to tie!

    1. Agreed. I had the same reaction. I wonder if he doesn’t make the flies too heavy so that they can gradually sink and cause a fish to move up to eat.
