Respite

A good friend’s father just passed away from COVID-19. For me, the virus has become more real, as a result.

So, the idea of going fishing feels both trivial and necessary at the same time. In the grand scheme of things, it’s a minor thing to do. After all, so many are suffering around the world. And, it’s the poor, who will bear the burden most, unfortunately.

But, fly fishing is necessary, too. It is a great way to take a mental break from the uncertainty that surrounds us all. So, it was with great joy that I met up with fellow blog team member, Joe Drake.

Joe took me to one of his favorite rivers, which will go unnamed by me. Water was cold, fast, and high, and it was a stunning stretch of water.

We determinedly threw streamers, both big and small. It was how we wanted to fish, and neither of us is a big fan of bobbers. We hit some deep runs and pools and awaited takes that actually didn’t happen. The anticipation was high.

And, when we reeled up after a few hours, I felt great. It was a beautiful river, and Joe and I were the only anglers around.

Joe thinks that the fishing will be very good again in a few weeks, once the bugs get back to business. And, I’m sure that will happen. I hit a different river on the way home and managed to land a nice rainbow.

And, during the drive back, I realized how it felt great to have a respite from all that is going on all around us.

Thank you, Joe, for your friendship and for a great outing!

  1. It was my pleasure. Sorry to hear that the virus has started hitting close to home. Glad that we both were able to get a little respite. Take Care Jo!

  2. Sorry to hear about your friend’s dad. I go through periods of feeling fearful, sad and even angry at times. Not always even sure why. I can’t wait to start fishing more as the seasons open (wachusett and quabbin) and the stripers return. Need to learn how to fish trout in rivers in Mass to fill the gaps I guess. Stay safe.
