Prime Time

I think we are easing into prime time for trout. Water levels seems to be adjusting down and the USGS gauges are showing ideal water temps. for many freestones.

Moreover, I find that that the crowds die down soon after trout stocking ends. The obvious pools for those without waders are cleaned out, and the other trout get more selective. Connecticut this week finished it spring stocking program, and I recall that Massachusetts usually finishes by Memorial Day.

Recently, at the end of the work day, I visited a local small stream. Bugs were everywhere. Dozens of chubs came to the net as did about 10 trout, including one that taped at 12.5″ and gave the 3-wt. quite a work out. Water was 64 °F and not that high. A Frenchie was all that I needed.

It was prime time for that stretch.

So, hopefully, some fly fishing will be on your agenda this upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Cash your chits, and tell friends and family that you’re going out on the water. This is the time.

My family is giving me the hall pass to spend a few days at the Farmington, and I’m really looking forward to it.
